    WHIMIS Symbols

    Flammable/Combustible means it is easily set on fire.

    Oxidizing means a substance that causes and/or helps to combustion of other substances.

    Poison means that it causes immediate and serious harmful effect to organsims.

    Biohazardous means that a substance can contain viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protoza.

    Compressed Gas means that it is gas simply compressed into a bottle, etc.

    Corrosive means that a substance can eat away another.

    Radioactive means that a substance is radioactive.

    Toxic means that it causes harmful long term effects on an organism.

    Commercial Safety Symbols
    Warning

    Warning means when surrounding a saftey symbol it means that it has a medium level of effectiveness.

    Danger

    Danger means when surrounding a saftey symbol it means that it has a high level of effectiveness.

    Caution

    Caution means when surrounding a saftey symbol it means that it has a low level of effectiveness.

    Flammable

    Flammable/Combustible means it is easily set on fire, depending on the symbol above that it's in.

    Explosive

    Explosive means that a substance may explode if heated, frozen, shaken, etc, depending on the symbol above that it's in.

    Poison

    Poison means that it may cause immediate or prolonged and serious/weak effect to humans, depending on the symbol above that it's in.

    Corrosive

    Corrosive means that the substance can eat away another, depending on the symbol above that it's in.

    Lab Expectations
    #1 - Do not eat or drink in the lab.
    #2 - Wear googles and lab coats when mixing chemicals.
    #3 - Never mix anything without instructions.
    #4 - Never work alone.
    #5 - Work quietly and carefully.
    #6 - Tie loose hair back and remove all jewellery.
    #7 - Inform teachers of all allergies and medical conditions.
    #8 - Never pour liquids down the sink without instructions.
    #9 - Report all accidents.
    #10 - Read all instructions before starting a lab and do not start without a teachers permission.
    #11 - Never smell substances directly; waft don't snarf.
    #12 - If harmful chemicals come in contact with you, rinse in water immediately and continuously for at least 10 minutes.
    #13 - Wash hands before you leave and clean up area.
    #14 - Broken glass should be placed in a separate container.

    Other Rules

    - If your lab coat catches on fire, stop, drop, and roll.
    - Whenever you spill an acid on yourself, go immediately to the shower, or if in the eye, the eye wash station.
    - If the fire alarm goes off, turn off all equipment, close doors/windows, and procede to the nearest exit in single file.
